SHAMAS FAQIR (1843-1901)

Shamas Faqir was born in Chinkral Mohalla, Habba Kadal, Srinagar. His real name was Mohammad Sidiq Bhat. Since childhood Shamas Faqir was drawn towards tassawuf. At 12, he started working under Neyam Saeb, who at that time was very old. Through Neyam Saeb, he reached Soch Milyaras. Apart from Soch Milyaras, he remained under the apprenticeship of Abdul Rehman of Barzulla, Atiqullah of Qalai Andar, Mohammad Jamal ud Din and Rehman Saeb of of Ghulab Bagh. For four years he collected the spiritual grace from Mohammad Jamal and remained loyal to Rehman Saeb till he was alive.
Shamas Faqir was a Sufi saint of Qadri Silsila and upon Qamal ud Din's direction he went to Amritsar in company of a majzoob (whose name is not known). Upon his return he stayed in Anantnag and married there. He remained in a cave for six months at Qaiz Bagh, Budgam and upon returning stayed forever at Krishpora. His mausoleum is also situated there. Tradition has it that when he was about to leave this world, he would sing:
Makk Madinas Barr Che Waeitheye
Neyaer Latiye Rouff Karaan
Door Chei Haraan Noor Phaeteye
Neyaer Latiye Rouff Karaan

He is survived by two sons and a daughter.
